Alright, the first and most important and rude rule I don't wanna say, but have to:
I don't trade with people with artistic skills lower than mine, sorry.
There can be exceptions though.If you have a neat style, an awesome character or you're just a good friend, I'd trade with you.Or maybe I just WANT to trade with you regardless of your skills and so on.Don't be afraid to ask.

2. First ask me, if I want to trade with you.I don't appreciate notes where people suddenly rub in my face what I should draw.
I will reply weather I accept or decline.Can't leave you people guessing now, can I.

3. Send me references of the thing(s)/character(s) you want me to draw [links].
I won't be wasting my time on browsing your page, you pageview hog.

4. I will draw the same ammount of characters as you.It won't be like: you draw me one character, and I'll draw you a group of 5. No. Say how many characters you want me to draw, so I'll know what to request in return.
